Children and young people from refugee and migrant backgrounds face unique challenges when it comes to completing their school assignments and homework. We provide two different homework clubs, in both Wellington and Lower Hutt, to support young people attending high school to access the support they need to complete homework tasks, develop good study habits and decrease social isolation.
Our Homework Clubs offer one-on-one support from a coordinator, experienced volunteer tutors, a registered teacher, and bi-lingual tutors, focusing on NCEA-specific assessments and tasks, utilising the New Zealand curriculum.
Everyone learns better with a full stomach so we provide healthy and nutritious snacks, then split up into groups and get some work done – in the computer lab, different classrooms focusing on different subjects or working together in a group. We play educational games, role play different scenarios and answer questions about school and life as a teenager – all in a safe and friendly environment.
Homework Club relies heavily on volunteers and their support of our young people, providing one on one homework tutoring. If you are interested in volunteering at Homework Club, please refer to our Volunteer page for more information. (volunteer)
