English for Families & Communities
English for Families classes are English classes for parents and caregivers who have children under 5. Free childcare is provided so that looking after children is not a barrier to attendance for anyone. These classes are often held on the premises of a primary school or in Plunket Rooms, and focus on topics relevant to the group like understanding school permission slips, school reports and school newsletters, making doctors’ appointments and more.
Intermediate English
The Intermediate English classes are targeted at learners that have a much higher level of English than our 2B General English students, and are interested in improving their everyday English skills. This course focuses on topics such as how to read letters and emails, how to give instructions to tradespeople at home, how to engage with parent-teacher interviews and healthcare providers.
English through Sewing
English for Sewing provides English language support through the medium of learning to sew. The class has been designed for learners with low levels of English, and is co-taught by a qualified ESOL Teacher, and a Sewing Teacher. You learn skills and technical language that can help you get a sewing industry job.
Kiwi English (Weekday/Weekend)
Our Kiwi English classes are held online and are best suited for those with relatively high levels of English. In these classes we learn common slang and colloquialisms and how to communicate with your Kiwi mates at work, as well as socially. Additionally ,we look at NZ history (including common Maori words use in English) and the Treaty of Waitangi. Learners give short presentations on topics of interest which builds confidence for doing something similar in the workplace.
English for Driving: Learner Licence Road Code
Always popular, our Saturday morning English for Driving: Learner Licence classes support learners to gain the necessary knowledge and skills they need to pass their Learner Licence tests. We have high success rates in this class, with most students going on to successfully learn the Road Code and get their licence.
Online English (daytime)
With Covid, we have been asked to keep a class online for those who cannot or do not want to attend classes in person. This group includes many in the 60 + age group. It is mixed level and well attended. Class topics look at what is relevant for the class members.
