English Support

Here at KiwiClass we run many different kinds of English classes, to suit all levels and styles of learning.

Classes we currently offer include:

  • General English – four levels including pre-literate
  • English for Work – Classes include NZQA Unit Standards
  • Intermediate English
  • English for Families and Community
  • English through Sewing
  • Kiwi English Weekday/Weekend
  • Online English
  • English for Job Searches
  • Learner Drivers License
  • English for Digital

We work hard to ensure our curriculum is interesting, relevant and utilises realistic, everyday examples to support our students to be able to apply their learning to the real world. We use practical learning techniques such as filling out forms at the doctors, completing permission slips for children’s’ school excursions, asking for directions from bus drivers and more, to put our learning into practice.

All our classes are free of charge for New Zealand residents and citizens.

Te Reo Māori, Tikanga Maori and Te Tiriti o Waitangi

Te Reo Māori and Te Tiriti o Waitangi are important features of the mahi (work) we do at KiwiClass. We support our students to develop an understanding of the principles of Tikanga Māori, and basic Te Reo Māori words, empowering them to feel more at home in Aotearoa New Zealand, and appreciate the culture they are becoming part of.

The kinds of Te Reo we teach our students include:

  • Greetings – kia ora, ka kite
  • Family and community – whānau, whare
  • Counting and pronunciation
  • Pepeha
  • Food – kai
  • Customs, culture and protocols – tikanga

We also ensure our students have a basic understanding of the concepts that underpin Te Tiriti o Waitangi, and some of the challenges tangata whenua still face today.

In 2019 we were proud to receive the Community-based Programme of the Year – Tangata Tiriti award from Ace Aotearoa for our Tikanga Programme.

From MCLaSS to KiwiClass In November 2019 we changed our name - a move that was decided by our students, and for our students. For nearly 25 years we have been known as MCLaSS, Multicultural Learning and Support Services. After extensive consultation with our students, we found that most didn't know what MCLaSS stood for, and that they had no personal connection to the name. After a lot of discussion and feedback, we asked our students and clients to vote on a new name and a new logo. The results were clear: our new name would be KiwiClass. Our students report that the new name makes them feel more welcome, and like a real member of their new home. We are excited to welcome you to KiwiClass!
